History & Mythology of Crete
Crete has been lived on for some nine thousand years, and almost every power in the Mediterranean has wanted it at one time or another. Europe’s first great civilization rose here and vanished, leaving palaces, sacred caves and a script that still cannot be read. What came after — Rome, Byzantium, Venice, the Ottomans, and an occupation still inside living memory — is written into the island’s towns and mountains.
